Spanner 2.5: The Rebel Sell

Chaos Angel Spanner — Chapter 2: Sex Bomb
Part 5: The Rebel Sell (Final Revision)

27 august 2014.
shira’s apartment.
Hope sees Shira off at the door. “This is silly, Shira.”

“So? Way to earn a necessary buck on the way to Karen’s party.” Shira winks.

“Don’t let yourself get sucked in.”

She rolls her eyes. “By some corporation? Get real.” She kisses Hope, slings the tote over her shoulder, and skips away.

game palace. At Fourth and Park across from the arrogant Dictel Tower, a new Game Wars opens to trouble. Outside the entrance, spilling into the street, sailors, gangsters, and fat Game Boyz in military-FPS T-shirts shove each other and trade accusations of unmanliness. Armoured police surround them nervously in hopes of keeping these men from having the riot they want. A television wall alternates games in progress with scary logos called ‘scream gems.’ The men sneer at the dance music and girlish squeals emanating from inside, where the Karen Kubota Instant Fanclub celebrate their hero’s return with a party and dance game contest catered by Pizza Mafia next door.

One gangster points up the hill. “Yo brahz! Scope the hardbody!” All the men turn to look. Carrying a self-refrigerating beverage tote down Fourth, Shira wears black ankle-high ring boots, diagonal-striped black-and-white bicycle tights, chibi-pirate hat, and gangster-baroque red T-shirt emblazoned with the iconic portrait of Che Guevara. Deftly she maneuvers past the cops, through the crowd, toward the front door, only to find herself blocked by an arrogant wall of Game Boyz. She drops the tote in front of them, crosses her arms, shifts her weight to one hip, flashes them a cockeyed smirk. “Who the fuck are you?”

The Game Boyz leader sneers, “We’re America’s future Tech Knights, bitch!”

She pats his belly. “This is Kinect country, fat boys. Y’all ain’t jock enough to handle us. Here, have at. Now get the fuck outta my way.” She muscles her way between two fat male bodies and sashays through the entrance. The back of her T-shirt reads, in white capital letters:
I TRIED TO EXTERMINATE THE EVIL YANKEE IMPERIALISTS,
BUT ALL I GOT WAS THIS STUPID T-SHIRT
Hands reach into the tote and extract 40-ounce cans bearing the equally iconic prison mugshot of Charles Manson: Lie™ brand amphetamine-boosted malt liquor, the gangster choice. The cries of men rise up: “Lie!” “Lie!” “My Lie!” “No, mine!” They fight over the cans of Lie™; the scene degenerates into chaos.

As Shira reaches the door, a video logo on the wall, a cheerful yet creepily disembodied Princess Ozma head, winks at her. Shira stops for a double-take, then looks over her shoulder to see if anybody noticed; they didn’t. She languidly removes her shirt to uncover her bare back, slowly swivels her hips, then turns around to see if her half-naked body distracts the crowd. Not even the cops notice her bare breasts. She bursts out laughing.

Once the tear gas flies, she rushes in, pulls the doors shut, locks the riot out, and throws herself into Karen’s waiting arms.

On your TV the riot video plays, a picture of the can appears, boldfaced words superimpose, a black male announcer eagerly echoes:
LIE™ MURDER BREW™.
IT’S KILLER!™
copco seattle. They watch the advert over and over. Shira makes it look too easy. Shockley shakes her head. “I still think she’s our monkeywrench.”

“Working freelance,” Kowalczyk observes.

“Spanner too, I bet,” says Sparks.

“Who would hire someone like that?” asks Shockley.

“The competition.”

“What competition?”

“You know. Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Yandex, Baidu. . .”

Kowalczyk pats Sparks on the shoulder. “I think the kid’s onto something here. So Jimmy, where’d you catch the buzz?”

“Security biz forums. The buzz is deafening.”

Shockley stares at Sparks unsmiling. “Then explain his manifestoes, Sparks.”

“He’s convinced the Revolution’s already dead, but our empty skulls need a monkeywrench upside the head to remind us, ergo.”

Kowalczyk cocks his head. “Heh. How well can you connect our villains?”

“Not so much. Spanner operates in the open, Rebel’s never been seen except on video. Different M.O., different targets.”

Shockley gestures at the Kinect so that a full-face image of Rebel Styles and a still from the Spanner post divide the screen. “Yet the patterns of Spanner’s and Styles’ reality distortion fields are nearly identical.”

“Sims, maybe? Maybe one’s got a generator.”

“We sent some Rebel Rebel videos to Quantico to have them compare it with the Spanner tapes. They sent me back the results yesterday. Spanner’s carrying a cloaking device, probably one stolen in the Flag Day raid on Dictel Research; but the results show his RDF’s not simulated. It’s his power, it’s the same as Styles’, and the cameras caught it. The Styles effect depends on it; Spanner just mixed it with his stolen cloak.” Shockley shakes her head sadly. “That power destroyed first Niemeyer, and then Ogden. . .”

“Not to mention several high muckymucks and all that’s left of Steve Jobs.”

Shockley points back at the commercial still playing on repeat. “I still think that’s our perp.”

“Logical enough. But with her you can never be certain of anything.”

“Well, whoever this Spanner bastard is, he’s still responsible for almost three hundred deaths.”

“Oh, them?” Kowalczyk laughs; Shockley looks at him in confusion. “Some of ’em got better already. The rest’ll be all fine in due time.”

“You mean they’re alive? That’s impossible, Kowalczyk, and you know it.”

“Clone. transplants. Hear?” Kowalczyk winks. “My dear Princess, you’re forgetting decades of Defense Department research dating all the way back to World War II. Every VIP in the Synarchy has his own personal clone bank. You might not know this, Miss formerly known as Becket, but you can bet your family business they whipped up a set for you too.”

“I’ll go ask Father, then.” Shockley sighs. “But let’s get back to the important question.”

“Who the fuck this Spanner guy is, right?” asks Sparks.

Kowalczyk corrects him. “Where the fuck this Spanner guy’s gonna strike next! But first we gotta know when. Jimmy! What’s the big high holy days after this?”

“Let’s see. . . there’s Restoration Day, Patriot Day, Columbus Day, Halloween, Election Day—”

Kowalczyk points at him and snaps his fingers. “That’s it! Election day!”

“When only those who value their lives vote Conservative Revolutionary. Perfect!”

“But on the last two Revolution Days, Spanner didn’t attack the same place twice,” says Shockley.

Kowalczyk snaps his fingers. “That’s a pattern! We can guess where he’ll be when. Then he’s fuckin’ history!

penguindrome. A knock on the front door of the East Bremerton squat. Alex walks irritably over to peer through the peephole. Deth Pussy carries a stack of pizzas. She opens the door and takes the pizzas. He grins and waves a thumb drive in front of her. She grabs him by the wrist and pulls him in so she can shut the door. “How’d you get back so early?”

“Guided missile,” he says. “Pizza Mafia’s on the way. By the way, our new friend Debaser’s proving himself trustworthy so far. He even got us some leverage on cousin Stu.”

“How close are they to our trail?”

“J.T. says Shockley thinks Spanner’s the same person as that Rebel Styles who’s been driving the Party bigwigs axe-crazy since our monkeywrench op.”

“Figures the bitch would. Any idea who’s behind Rebel?”

Steve shrugs. “Beats me. What’s your plans for ‘Vote Conservative Or Eat Flaming Death’ Day?”

Alex laughs. “Well, there’s Plan A, and then there’s Plan B. Hope’s got Plan A worked out, but everybody knows the Man won’t stand for it ’cos he never does. As for Plan B, we’re still scoping out the Fearsome Foursome’s points of vulnerability.”

“Any progress on that?”

“Nothing fatal yet. So far, everything’s still fully deniable in Salem and Bangor.”

“Any word from our flamin’ redhead?”

“Hi, Steve!” Shira waves from the recliner, wearing her new black and silver sailor-suit school uniform with matching beret. She sits up and holds out her arms in show-me position. “Like it?”

Kawaiiii! Ross got a sailor schoolgirl fetish?”

Shira holds up her skirt to show it off and winks. “Banned in Japan, even, so why not. I already graduated homeschool, so I’m doing college half the day and tutoring at Bangor the rest of the day, thus the beret.”

“You know you gotta wear ‘absolute terror’ stockings with that.”

She grins. “There’s an idea!” The smile disappears. “Now why Bangor High ain’t actually a prison, I got no idea. Still, SPEC run it like one, only they cram useless information and politically correct memes down unwilling throats.”

“It’s called ‘schooling,’” Alex explains to Deth. “Scientifically proven to cause low grades and high dropout rates.”

“Hope’s out of the system, so it’s my job to organize.”

“Whoa, babe,” says Deth, “won’t they like kick you out like they did her?”

“Employees get fired. Me, I’m under binding company contract, which puts me in perfect position.”

“You got anything on the Foursome?”

“You already know who got Wayne Tremayne.” She winks. “But like Alex said, it’s all still deniable. They got an army of Highly Paid Professionals covering up their messes, y’know.”

“They always assume we’re stupid,” adds Alex. “They don’t expect us to catch ’em with their pants down, tweeting their johnson to the wrong girl, sleeping with the incompetent yet hunky assistant they just hired, talking to some foreign agent on some clandestine phoneline, or downloading Nazi child snuff porn off the Darknet. So far they’re keeping their weaknesses under plausible deniability. But sooner or later, one of ’em’s gonna slip up. That’s when we strike.”

“But now we can’t rely on Rebel Rebel. They’ve got her covered now, especially the new Chief Shepherd who’s taking over from the dearly departed Wayne Tremayne. Emerson, his name is? He’s even using her as a public display of overcoming temptation.”

Deth slaps his forehead in disbelief. “Graceland, Graceland, Memphis, Tennessee! Jesus H. America exclamation point, I never figured they’d find a way to make pretty little Rebel serve the Man.”

“Didn’t help Luke Everson’s predecessor from Memphis, Tennessee, however,” replies Alex. “Ward Tremayne failed the Rebel Rebel test for all to see.”

“Yeah, caught it on TMZ,” says Shira. “But you gotta hand it to that Everson, yeah that’s his name, he’s too clever for his own good. Probably fall under Stepmommie Dearest’s thumb before he knows it, like her hot new boyfriend, I mean cash cow, uh, Prophet she just acquired.”

“That Byron Scofield who’s all over the tele these days. Can’t stand him.”

“Which only means we gotta dig deeper to get some real dirt on Everson and the rest of the Foursome, preferably something radioactive.”

Alex sighs in frustration. “There’s gotta be something we can find on ’em.”

“I’m tracking somebody right now. Old fiend of my father’s. Knowing him and his passion for the ’roids, I get the feeling he’ll lead us somewhere.”

“Well, praise ‘Bob’!” exults Deth. He picks up the dog-eared Civet paperback off the coffee table. “And you’ll find your radioactive dirt the way Dorinda finds her treasure?” He tosses the book to her.

Shira points back at him and grins. “Yeah! Like that!”

Someone knocks on the door. “Took her about time,” says Alex. She goes over to open it. Jennifer, wearing a uniform matching Shira’s, gives her a quick hug and kiss (“Hiya sis!”) and rushes over to Shira’s chair, sweeps her out of it into her arms, and kisses her passionately. “Sorry we gotta go so fast, but I promise I’ll be back for the pizza. [blows kiss] *mwah!” She takes Shira by the hand (she waves goodbye) and sweeps her out the door.

bridge. The Penguindrome is on the Eastside. Shira lives downtown. Jennifer drives her over the Warren Avenue Bridge that connects Eastside to Westside. She caresses Shira’s bare leg. “Hear about the murders at Bangor High?”

“Another Rebel victim?”

“Slasher. I’m amazed the place hasn’t burnt down already.”

“Gangbangers oughta torch it. With him in it. Then we can trash ’em.”

Jennifer’s smile disappears. “The Shelley twins are going there.”

Shira perks up immediately. “You don’t say.”

Jennifer caresses Shira’s breast. “I’m still amazed you survived the great Yakuza gaijin hunt.”

Shira kisses Jennifer’s hand. “I’m still shocked you survived Blake Island with hardly a scratch.”

“I couldn’t let Kira down.” They look into each other’s eyes wistfully, then redirect their attention to the road and sigh.

“I’m still amazed they’re letting us drive at our age.”

“Now that the Nanny State’s gone moral, any kid can now get a combat assault rifle without a license or drive a Hummer recklessly as long as they don’t commit fornication in the back seat.”

“Not that anything’s keeping us out of the back seat.” Jennifer laughs. Shira looks off the bridge. “Your fascist stepsister thinks it’s me.”

“I’m surprised she doesn’t assume it’s me. She always hated our family.”

“Not just Spanner. Rebel too.”

“Well, then. Let her assume.”

“Looks like we got the Foursome off balance for once.”

Jennifer smiles ironically. “Just in time for school. By the way, how’s it going with Karen?”

“She really, really wants you to join us.”

She winks. “Both ways, even?”

Shira winks back. “Damn right.” As soon as they stop at the Eleventh Street light, they kiss.

“You stay with her tonight.”

Jennifer peers at Shira suspiciously. “And why?”

“I got business.”

“Business.”

“A friend. You might know him.” Shira winks.

“You’d better promise you won’t let him get between us, my love.”

“Not even Leila Shelley can, sweet cousin. I totally love you forever.” Shira kisses her deeply.

Jennifer manages a wan smile. The light turns green, so she shifts her attention back to the road and drives. “Okay, Shira. Do your business. But don’t let yourself fall for any of these guys. And don’t forget our sacred vow.”

“The moment the Eugenics Institute is destroyed, we’re getting married.”

“You got it.” Jennifer passes by her usual left turn at Sixth Street and heads to the end of the street at Burwell.

Suddenly, two battle hotrods block the intersection. Behind them, two more race in to block any escape from behind. Burly gangsters with monster-clown tattoos and Road Warrior spiked leather battle gear, leap out of their vehicles and surround Jennifer’s car, slapping truncheons into their hands like riot police.

Shira goes deadly calm. “Well, well, well.”

“The Killen Jokerz. But of course.”

“I wonder what they want,” Shira says “blonde” fashion.

“Trouble’s what they want,” Jennifer says deadpan.

Shira grins wickedly. “Then let’s give ’em some.”

Two Klownz tap the door windows. Jennifer looks mock-innocently at her would-be assailant; Shira’s ironic smile tells hers, You don’t know what shit you just got yourselves into. Then the cousins look at each other.

Jennifer knees the bottom of the dashboard. Sonic disruptors emerge from small doors in the car doors to shoot ultrasonic pain into the Klownz’ groins; they fall to the pavement writhing and screaming. The cousins reach for their personal sound blasters and roll out the open doors.

Six Klownz attack. Blasts of solid infrasound hammer their surgically boosted man-weapons. All six go down hard. One Klown reaches for an Uzi. Shira stands over him and zaps his shoulder blade. He screams, twitches, tries to hold his shattered scapula.

A screaming COPCO squad car squeals into the intersection. The siren shuts off and two agents get out: Sparks and one other. They walk around moaning prostrate Klownz toward Shira and Jennifer. Sparks says, “These guys giving you lovely ladies any trouble?”

Shira winks. “No trouble for us, thanks. You wanna walk?”

Jennifer stares at them jealously. “You mean he’s—” Shira shuts her up with a sweet kiss, then smiles and nods.

Kowalczyk says, “I’ll do the report while you two do your, uh, business.” He winks at the girls.

“Okay,” says Sparks. “Let’s go, redhead.”

Shira winks at him. They walk arm-in-arm down Burwell Street while Jennifer tells Kowalczyk what happened.

Spanner 2.4: Rebel's Game

Chaos Angel Spanner — Chapter 2: Sex Bomb
Part 4: Rebel’s Game (Final Revision)

22 august 2014.
boathouse.
As Shira walks up the marina walkway in baby tee, microskirt, and sneakers, Karen stands at the prow in a bikini, tall and beautiful, neither as curvy as Shira nor as slim as Jennifer. The men around her approve, but she is exposing herself to inflame Shira’s desire. She bats away a thrown stone and finds herself facing a hate-maddened old Moral Enforcer trying to shoot her. Shira capoeira-kicks him against a nearby yacht to knock him out so he drowns, then parkour-leaps on deck.

Horrified, Karen tries to protest, but Shira silences her with a kiss. “I love you, Karen,” she says. “This is war. Those people are conscienceless killers.” Karen sighs.

They strip each other bare in her compartment. Hands on each other’s shoulders, they gaze at each other with pleasure. Karen says, “Shira, I’ll let you make love to me all you want. But I need you to chant with me. Do it for Kira.”

Shira looks silently into Karen’s eyes. She looks down at Karen’s nude beauty for a moment, then gives in with a sigh. “Okay. I’ll do it. For you.”

“Thank you!” Karen pulls Shira tight and rewards her with a long joyful kiss.

Annoyed to see the old man dead in his slip, its owner hauls the corpse off to the skip.

sparks’ apartment. To the day world, he’s Jim Sparks, greenhorn cop whose ex-FBI father is COPCO’s all-powerful boss. Only to the night world does he show his dark side. He earned his handle “Debaser” for his superhuman skill in raping the securest databases, a skill he learned from dear old dad.

In the spare bedroom he commands the four monitors of his computer with the dataglove on his left hand. Lower right, email notifications; upper right, video window. A dead woman sent him an email. When he opens it, U.S. Marshal Gloria Wright speaks her final words:

If you are reading this, I am already dead. The real target was not the senator, but the little girl. Her name is Lucie Stenbeck. She is Drusilla Becket’s granddaughter. Shepherd Becket will stop at nothing to get hold of this girl and control her. You must keep Lucie Stenbeck out of her hands at all costs. You have full authorization to use deadly force if necessary. Goodbye, James Sparks.

She left him a gift from beyond the grave: a mysterious video, blurred almost beyond recognition, of a small child crying. Through the filter he can only recognize the child as female, but he recognizes with a shudder the voice of Lucie Stenbeck. The time stamp dates the video to the time of the Tohoku earthquake. Yet there is no indication that the video was shot in Japan, during the quake or the devastating tsunami that followed. Suddenly it ends. His blood goes cold when he realizes that the filter was not Photoshop but smoke, and the shooting location was on fire. Jackie Stenbeck’s yacht? The last moment of the infamous French mobster’s life? But Stenbeck died in a 2009 hurricane, not the 2011 quake. What was happening to five-year-old Lucie Stenbeck on March 11, 2011?

The new-message chime sounds. A new email from Loca Fantoma. Picture: Shira waves left-handed at him in full-frontal cosplay, nude but for Kekkou Kamen gloves, boots, and floppy-eared mask—oh god, the tilt of her body, the swing of her hips, that sleek smooth cinnamon skin, so deadly sexy so fucking young—his knees go weak. Message text:
Thought this might cheer you up. <3 S

“Huh?” Just to be sure, he runs a malware check: negative. It turns out to be a record of a recent exploit by the Technosphere’s most scandalous Player, sneaking around one of the elite gameworlds:
Aya Shibata stalks the miko. The dark elf with Shira’s body sports tousled straight red hair, long pointy ears, sweet malicious grin, and mud where clothes should be. She owns you. She has seen vocaloids slash and eat each other, yet those too pliable girls (and boy) give in too easily to her seduction. Bullet-hell shmup bosses are dangerous; Aya prefers a real challenge. To catch this hypersensitive onmyouji she needs to rely on more than just her Tracker skills and activate her reality distortion field to avoid being detected and Repulsed out of Gensoukyou altogether. She intends to do more than sneak her fingers into those ticklish bare armpits. Her diminutive prey does not notice her stalker rise behind her.

Suddenly Reimu feels someone a full head taller grab her one-armed from behind, painfully grip her left breast, and hold a large Bowie knife in front of her in a gloved left hand. But Aya does not plunge the knife into her heart; instead, she cuts through the miko’s hakama as far down as she can reach. When Reimu realizes who her attacker is and what she plans to do to her, she screams—
The scene cuts off. “Oh shit—” Sparks lowers his elbows to the desk, holds his head in his hands, shakes it sadly, laughs helplessly. When he recovers enough to wipe away tears, he points at the monitor: “This.”

Lower left: his news channels tell him that the Mafias are all in a panic over Spanner, worrying which Mob he’ll hit next: the Wops? Spics? Chinks? Russkies? Every Mafia hopes Spanner will trash all its rivals, including the Party itself. Spanner is not so discriminating. “Heh.”

Upper left: the talking heads spew the same hysterical spin over the Spanner incident on the lamestream news. It all blends together into mush in his mind, so he has the sound off. He saw Spanner’s spectacular début when the tagbomber crashed the opening of the Dictel Tower that blights the Bremerton skyline. Spanner kept below notice until he threw his monkeywrench on Revolution Day. His TrumpCity™ appearance proved he means business.

Focus lower right, alt-tab: clandestine Anonymous IRC channels: LulzSec, SP Nation, h4xx0rc1s7z, Wrecking Krewe. How to join Anonymous: 1. decide it exists; 2. include yourself in it. They chatter rapid-fire about Spanner. Grokking his Krewe connection, the other cells backlog his channel with huzzahs and hell-yeahs.

Alt-tab: a file window foregrounds. Video of Kowalczyk’s interrogation of Ogden’s priest. He plays it briefly.
Priest: It was Rebel Styles! I fell into a mad passion for
him—
Kowalczyk: Isn’t Rebel Styles a girl?
Priest: No! I saw him, I kissed him, I made love to him—
Kowalczyk: Well, I’ve got evidence she’s the same girl as that Aya kid from Japan.
Priest: All makeup and camera angles. Do not be deceived by him! He is the very image of Lucifer himself as he appeared to Eve with the apple of sin.
Kowalczyk: (annoyed) Yeah, yeah...
Sparks stops the video. “Sorry, preach, Rebel ain’t no boy. She’s a rare true loli.” Lower right, alt-tab: bring up his news channel on the terror underground, upper left. Predictably, the Left terrorists are hailing Spanner as their hot new hero. He is not impressed. Close window.

Spanner’s been around longer than you think. The mysterious monkeywrencher first popped up on the Darknet shortly after the coup under four different “1337” handles associated with various shadowy branches of Anonymous. It soon hit him that Spanner and Rebel Styles were the same. He never told any of his fellow cops even after he joined COPCO. He had no reason to. He was in love with Rebel Rebel.

He still is.

But he knew that Rebel Styles was a true loli. No boy, no ordinary girl can be so sexually extreme. Ogden’s priest is raving about a boy because his threatened faith compels him to deny. Sparks was content to worship her from afar, behind firewall and encryption, away from the long fist of the Law. He never knew she was real till he met her.

And so he joined her.

COPCO will never know. The truth behind Spanner and Rebel is far beyond their limited understanding. His father would go mad. Kowalczyk doesn’t believe a mere child can be that seductive. His immunity to Charm makes him blithely oblivious in the face of so powerful a Charmer as Shira Thomas. Shockley hates her with a lover’s passion—for the way she humiliates her father repeatedly in game after game of chess? feuds so openly with her cult-guru aunt? Knowing Diana Becket Shockley’s background, you’d think she’d be targeting her ex-stepmother Willa Richter-Thomas. But there’s no accounting for human irrationality.

He plays the Spanner video on three screens, from beginning to end, then plays it again. He watches Spanner throw the wrench left-handed, in slow-motion, with uncanny accuracy. He watches Spanner expertly manipulate cloaking device, hoverboard, heatseekers, monkeywrench, security personnel, and the Becket brothers’ giant-monster egos. He watches as Spanner owns all opponents with practiced ease. He pauses on a frame shortly after Steve Jobs’ ka explodes, but before Spanner disappears.

“I know your secret, Spanner. Be glad I’m on your side.” He zooms in on the trenchcoated figure, then to the blurred image of his helmet. “We’ve got business... if you know what I mean...”

He maximizes the chatlines on all four monitors. The Darknet echoes with hosannas from the guerrillas in the hacker underground. From the white hats who allowed their souls to get bought out by the Cartel, he hears a frenzy of condemnation and hatred that he knows can come only from envy. From the mercenary black hats: silence.

He plays Rebel’s game because he wants her for himself, whatever it takes. From the Darknet, in the shadows, he’ll do anything he can to help Shira and her Krewe. He hates how the coup destroyed law enforcement: COPCO’s hostile takeover of all state and local police departments, schizophrenic swings between inquisition and corruption, license for its agents to commit even terrorism against civilians with no accountability except profit, and massive infiltration by terrorists mafias foreign governments and business rivals, as shareholders as well as cops, so that it has become impossible to tell if an agent is honest or on the make or which faction he’s working for. Of all the people in the Imperial government, the only ones more corruptible than private police are politicians. His desire: her Spanner operation with him against COPCO itself.

But among cops he will continue to lie low, say nothing, keep up his masquerade as Jimmy-Boy the Pretty City reject gofer. When undercover, he learned, never let anyone else know who you’re really working for: to have one’s cover blown can spell death—or worse.

With datagloved left hand he minimizes all windows on all monitors, keys the screensaver active. In place of the KDE desktop, images of Shira Thomas in various states of undress: in bikinis, body paint, nothing at all. He gets up to leave. When he reaches the door, he shuts off the bedroom light. He stares back at the shifting images of seductive Shira for several minutes to torture himself with unbearable sweet longing. Then he shuts the door and leaves.

copco seattle. Shockley barges into Chief Becket’s office to breathlessly tell him: “Brother! I have a theory! Rebel Styles is Spanner!

The one-eyed man looks at her skeptically. “How do you know that?”

“Their reality distortion fields are the same!”

“Your suspect’s dead.”

“Kowalczyk’s wrong. One twin survived. Shira Thomas is a high-level Charmer. She’s all but broadcasting her guilt into my dreams.”

“Dreams won’t cut it. Prove it, Diana.”

underground city. The place: Seattle’s old city beneath the streets of Pioneer Square, tourist-overrun by day; at night it belongs to the badside rejects, swarming fighting dancing making out, drawn underground to questionably legal nightclubs segregated below to keep them from damaging the city above.

The club: the techGothic. The scene: Dark Industrial. The lighting: neon noir. The music: metal house at deafening volume, subsonic beat shaking the building, guitars roaring screaming like tortured demons. The Rivetheads rule here. The perfect place for guerrilla hackers to disappear.

The crowd on the floor convulse like zombies and broken robots. Blue-skinned nude deadgirls robodance on platforms. Men hidden by darkness in back copulate with sexbots sculpted into illegally grotesque fetishistic forms. Oliver Thorwald attempts to screw a sexbot only to start hitting it in rage at his own impotence. Johnny-Johnny Johnson giggles stupidly. A jealous serial-killer fangirl obsessed with Thorwald, a gothpunkette sporting black leather boots and skirt, butchered hair dyed black, and black flame tattoos covering her naked torso, tries to pull him away. “What the fuck are you doing, bitch?” he shrieks.

“Get away from that—thing!” the fangirl wails. “You belong to me and only me!”

In the dark booth farthest back a man in black duster and mirrorshades sits alone. The hot and heavy robosexual action distracts attention away; the loud music creates excellent cover for clandestine conversation. James Sparks waits for a man he arrested by day. Soon enough, the Wrecking Krewe hacker styling Dead Hello Kitty silently slips in across the table. “Sorry about the shakedown,” says Sparks.

“No prob, J.T.,” Deth Pussy replies. “Cost of doing business. Got my Spanners?” Sparks pulls a one-terabyte thumb drive out of his coat’s inside pocket and flips it across the table. Steve catches it and throws one of his own to Sparks. “Six years of Rebel and Aya-chan, complete as of today. So what’s the 411?”

“Your cousin sent some vids to a lab for reality distortion field analysis. The now ex-colleague who beat you up? One of the victims. They suspect Rebel herself’s our Spanner.”

“So how come she popped up right after the monkeywrench hit?”

“Beats me. Hell, even Shira’s got no idea.”

“Well, hell!” Deth laughs. “You think Artie Brinkman’s got a hand in it?”

“If that priest’s right and Rebel’s a boy, she’d be right up his alley, but she’s not, so no. Besides, the whole thing came outta the blue.”

“Scratch one more hypothesis...”

“But Art’s got Stu for seeing a woman not his wife. Video’s right there, see for yourself.”

“Ha! Figures ol’ cuz’d be on the make!”

Sparks leans toward Deth. “Every cop’s on the make, Steve. What’s the COPCO corporate motto? To Surveil And Punish. You do the cop thing only ’cuz you wanna beat people up, spy for the enemy, preferably both. Wanna survive with a badge? Better know who’s rolling whom for whom.”

“Consider it grokked. Hey, keep in touch.”

Sparks winks. Deth Pussy gets up and disappears into the crowd of robotic dancers. Sparks pockets Deth’s thumb drive and smiles.

Thorwald’s psycho fangirl hammers him with her fists and angrily screams, “I’m your one and only! I’ll kill for you! I’ll even die for you!”

The killer grabs her by the throat, throws her out of his booth, leaps on her, and stabs her in the chest repeatedly. Blood flows freely from the incisions in and between her bare tattooed breasts. No one bothers to notice except Sparks.

The fangirl gasps, “I love you.” She dies with a sigh and a smile. He slits her throat open to make sure she’s properly dead.

Thorwald climbs to his feet and grins at Johnny-Johnny. “Great thing about fangirls is, they always die squeeing.”

Sparks cocks his gun and points it in his face. “Had your fun quota for the night, Ollie?”

“Seriously!” whines Thorwald. “She begged me to kill her!”

“I bet Leila will be all pleased over that.”

“I’m special! Don’t you know what a torment it is to be so rich, handsome, and popular?”

Sparks rolls his eyes. “One could never have guessed.”

I deserve Leila as a reward!

Sparks throws his head back and laughs at him hard.

“What’s so funny, Sparks?”

“And then once you get into Leila’s panties, she’ll bite off your manhood, same way she did your butt buddy Johnny-Johnny.”

Thorwald launches a vicious uppercut at Sparks’ jaw. Sparks intercepts it and throws him into Johnny-Johnny, knocking out the giggling thug. He glares at the black-trenchcoated man.

“Y’know, Ollie,” says Sparks, “you may be richer than God, but I was better looking back when I was as ugly as my daddy. Just wait till lovely Leila gets a peek at that shapeless sack of suet you call a pretty face.” He turns toward the entrance and slowly walks away, leaving Thorwald twitching with impotent rage.

boathouse. Reva and Eddie awaken late at night to the hypnotic sound of two beautiful voices chanting. They are overjoyed to see Shira and Karen chant together, tears flowing for each other and for Kira.

Some time later, they hear the sweet sounds of lesbian love coming from Karen’s compartment. They stare at each other and blush. They resist the temptation to laugh. “Just like me and Willa,” Reva says wistfully.

Eddie sighs. “Runs in the family...”

Spanner 2.3: Shockley on the Case

...from previous

Chaos Angel Spanner Chapter 2: Sex Bomb
Part 3: Shockley on the Case (Final Revision)

copco bremerton. Shockley is furious to find Locke Holmes himself overseeing the Styles case; she glares at him with undisguised contempt. “What’s the problem, Shockley? It’s not like you’re still Special Enforcement.”

“If you hadn’t blown that super-soldier case in Japan, Holmes, Ogden might still be around.”

“So Ogden finally pegged out, I see.”

“Ogden’s in the bughouse because of one Rebel Styles. I’m here to confront this monster. You’re here because you caused an international incident. Nice repair job on the face, by the way.”

“I got too caught up in your game of Texas justice. Don’t forget you’re not Special Enforcement anymore.”

Shockley and Holmes stare each other down. Kowalczyk’s finger traces the scars on Sparks’ face. Sparks says, “His Resculptor came highly recommended.”

They look at the FBI agents. Kowalczyk whispers, “I get the funny feeling this is not about to go well.”

interrogation room. Sitting arms crossed across the table, Shira rolls her eyes at Shockley and Holmes. “Great. They give me a failed strike cop and a failed dick. Nice try, FBI.”

“You—” Holmes restrains Shockley. They stare at each other. Shockley sits down.

“Okay, then,” says Holmes, “let’s get down to business.”

Shira interrupts. “Hello, great detective. You sound like you’ve been away from Scotland Yard too long. America can ruin you. Nice Resculpt, by the way. And a hearty top o’ the mornin’ to you, Princess. Remember he blew the Murdoch case too.”

“Well, then! Now that we’re properly introduced, we need to know what connections you have to Rebel Styles.”

Shockley blurts, “Why did you do it?” Both Holmes and Shira glare at her to shut her up.

On the other side of the one-way window, Kowalczyk tells Sparks, “Like I said.”

Shira replies, “No, ma’am, I have never beaten my wife.” To Holmes: “I just heard about that Styles thing this morning. Apparently that Spanner guy set her off.”

Holmes sits up suddenly, eyes wide open, lips pursed. (Outside, Sparks grins. “Lunch is on you.” Kowalczyk slaps his forehead. “Again?”) He laughs nervously. “I heard you were an amateur detective. Please explain to us your theory, on the record.”

“By some Spanner-produced chaos effect, Styles seems to have reversed the Law of Social Darwinism. She destroys the strong and leaves the weak alone. She’s already taken out several leaders, enough to send the Party into a panic.”

Shockley growls, “You can’t deny your connection, Thomas.”

“Oh, me? I’m just here ’cuz I’m charming and look like her.”

Holmes leans forward. “A Charmer, to be exact. We’re convinced you’re in league with her.”

“You mean conspiracy.”

“The world is locked in conspiracy against Our Nation!” barks Shockley.

“Conspiracy, conspiracy. The whole Party’s made up of conspiracy theorists, Princess. But look at it objectively and you’ll see the monster’s a hallucination.”

Holmes says, “Secretary Becket himself believes you yourself are the monster.”

“Figures he would. He blanks out the real threat, the one all technocrats are always in denial of. But it’s already too late. It’s already done its dirty deed.”

“And what could that be?”

“Entropy.”

Shockley shakes her head in disbelief. “You have got to be kidding.”

“Uh-uh, Princess. Your Revolution resurrected a dead empire, and it came back all zombie. Things fall apart, Your Highness. All I’m doing is trying to keep innocent bystanders from getting crushed by the debris.”

Sparks and Kowalczyk intercept Shira outside. “Just on a whim,” says Kowalczyk, “since we have a Charmer here. . .”

In the next room is a captured Caliphate jihadi chained up and masked like a feral vampire. His thick beard hardly hides MS13 gang tattoos. Across the table, Shira sits down seductively, leans on one propped arm, and gives him an ironic smile. He stares back hatefully, a perfect monster of holy hatred. She grins. “You and I know the Holocaust happened.”

Lie!” He goes berserk, strains against the chains, struggles to break free, screams curses in bad Arabic. Watching outside, Sparks and Kowalczyk grin at each other.

Shira shoots him a deadly look. He goes silent and limp. “You think I’m blaspheming your holy prophet Hitler.”

“Evil infidel witch,” he grunts, “you will burn in Hell.”

Mischief slips back into her eyes. “The evidence can’t lie. Your holy prophet sacrificed six million Jews to [gestures ooga-booga] the Dev-il.”

He roars and tries to break his chains again. She flashes him a beautiful grin. Sparks and Kowalczyk high-five.

21 august 2014.
dreamspace.
Rebel Styles, an adult seductress now, dances to torment Shockley. Multiple neon outlines of her wild-haired, cat-eared, sleek nude body swirl against the darkness in threatening dance. The darkness falls like a veil, and Rebel emerges into full view, painted in psychedelic colors, but otherwise wearing nothing but black cat ears in her golden hair and a mocking smile on her face.

Shira Thomas emerges behind Rebel, standing sideways to Shockley with arms crossed. Unsmiling, she turns her head to look at Shockley. Then she looks away and disappears.

Rebel, now close, opens her mouth to speak. Her word takes the form of a large wrench that hits Shockley in the face—

shockley’s house. Shockley awakens bolt upright in her chair. Cold sweat drenches her nightgown and robe. She signs leans back in the living room recliner with her cellphone in her lap, too angry to be able to sleep. The interpretation is clear to her: Thomas is monkeywrenching her investigation so arrogantly, she’s invading her dreams just to gloat in her face.

The phone rings. Kowalczyk. She presses “talk.” “I dreamt of Rebel Styles. She took the form of a naked Shira Thomas and attacked me.”

Kowalczyk’s chuckle sounds especially annoying over the phone. “She slung some ‘scream gems’ at you, didn’t she.”

“She spat a wrench in my face,” she says sourly. “Thomas is stonewalling us and enjoying every bit of it.”

“Just make sure to keep Rebel Rebel away from big brother. He’s such a logophobe, Styles’ll spit out a few Sony faces just for the lulz.”

“‘Scream gems.’ I get it. So what’s with the late-night interruption?”

“Heard the news yet?”

“About what?”

“What just went down at the big Cartel shindig in the Big Apple. Looks like we just got us a new friend. The talking heads are calling him ‘Spanner’ ’cuz he threw a monkeywrench into the festivities. Literally. Destroyed a perfectly expensive Jumbotron. I sent you video.” He hangs up. Slowly she raises herself from her chair.

On her way to her office, she finds her ten-year-old daughter Belle standing in the middle of the hall. “Mommy?”

“No!” snaps Shockley. “Shut up and go back to bed. Now!”

Belle lowers her head, sighs in despair, and sulks back into her bedroom.

In her office, she checks her email on the computer and opens one related to an ongoing cold case. Surveillance video found in a Japanese city destroyed by the Tohoku earthquake of 2011. In the minutes leading up to the quake, an unknown super takes the power form of a giant inverted vortex. At the exact moment of the quake, the super powers out and the video ends. Shockley quickly deduces that the energy from the power-out likely triggered the quake. But she wonders what, if anything, this has to do with Rebel Styles, or Spanner.

The one from Kowalczyk contains three security videos depicting the same incident. In them, a lone terrorist in motorcycle helmet and long black trenchcoat flies in on a hoverboard, fires rockets to knock down catwalks crowded with armoured antiterrorists, throws a large pipe wrench into the giant television screen to shatter it, and disappears in a whirlwind.

It’s not the incident itself that catches her attention. There’s something strange about the terrorist. She replays the videos, one by one. The terrorist seems to flicker into and out of existence: obviously he’s cloaking. The latest combat weaponry is a highly prized commodity in the criminal underworld. In between, though, everything seems to revolve around him in a swirling vortex: dust, smoke, debris, people’s attention, the very air itself. The sensation feels very familiar to her—the same sensation she got from the Rebel Rebel videos—

With a shock, she realizes: he’s projecting a reality distortion field

Spanner 2.2: Ghost Hunting

Chaos Angel Spanner — Chapter 2: Sex Bomb
Part 2: Ghost Hunting (Final Revision)

20 august 2014.
fbi headquarters.
The FBI are swamped enough with mafia- and Nazi-related child porn cases, many of them snuff, that they are tempted to pass the Rebel Styles case by. But Special Agent Joseph Ogden is disturbed enough that he argues the case to Director Radisson. “Men going nuts all over the country, offing themselves, going berserk. Important men, even. And all of ’em have one thing in common, and it’s these Rebel Rebel videos. There’s similar cases in Japan too. I say we need to stop this Rebel Styles before she goes viral and does some real damage.”

The tall blond woman he has just interrupted is Special Agent Diana Shockley. “I agree with Agent Ogden. This does sound urgent.”

Radisson says in his Australian accent, “You two are the most effective agents we’ve got, so I’m putting you on the case. COPCO operatives will meet you as soon as you get to Seattle.”

seattle. COPCO’s up-and-coming vice president, John Cameron Becket, a tough-looking blond man with an eyepatch, meets Agents Ogden and Shockley at the airport. Shockley does not look pleased. “Hello, John.”

“Is he your brother?” asks Ogden.

“I am,” says the one-eyed man. “Diana, you think you can handle this case?”

Shockley glares at him. “I should be asking that question of you.”

“Hmph.” He leads them to the armoured stretch Hummer waiting for them.

At the Public Safety Building downtown, Ogden and Shockley walk down the hall of the COPCO Seattle field office. Shockley says, “I don’t know if you’re up to this, Ogden.”

“I’ve been in this business so long, I can handle anything.”

“I suspect this is the kind of case only a woman can handle. The Styles case has already destroyed some of our best male agents. From what I’ve heard, this sounds like one of those ‘brown note’ cases.”

“What’s a ‘brown note’?”

Shockley has Ogden ask Lavette Perry, a black female agent who moonlights as a jazz pianist, who tells him, “Oh, that’s a note that, when somebody plays it, makes people shit their pants. Whenever you hear it, no matter what instrument it’s played on or how hard you try to prevent it, you shit.”

“Where’d you hear that?” asks Ogden, still puzzled.

Lavette winks. “From a friend of a friend.”

Later, COPCO counterhacker agent Stuart Kowalczyk tells Ogden, “Ever heard of ‘Videodrome’? It was a signal that took over your mind and caused brain tumors when it was played through an old-fashioned CRT TV.”

Shockley sighs. “That was just a movie, Kowalczyk.”

“Well, Agent Shockley, this Rebel Rebel is the same kind of thing, only I know it ain’t the signal.”

Instead of joining the others for lunch, Ogden goes to confessional at the nearest Catholic church. The attending priest is eating lunch. Ogden speaks the traditional formula: “Forgive me, father, for I have sinned.”

“How may I help you, my son?” asks the priest.

“I am called to battle, yet I am weak.”

“So what’s eating you?”

“I thought I would be catching one last murderer in my career, yet now I find myself fighting a demon of Hell.”

“And what may be this demon’s name?”

“Rebel Styles.”

The priest gasps in horror, drops his lunch, and stares wide-eyed at Ogden. His eyes narrow as shock turns to rage. His voice takes on a low, rough, terrifying tone. “You must find and destroy this demon, Agent, before destroys everything. Find him, and destroy him!”

“Him?”

Him!

A week later, the priest is arrested for having molested altar boys for two decades; he raves to his interrogators that Rebel Styles is actually a boy who seduced him. The cops laugh at him. Ogden is not convinced he’s wrong.

Ogden crosses himself when Kowalczyk shows him his first Rebel Rebel video. “The priest begged me to kill Styles.”

“Easy to figure why,” says Kowalczyk.

“He also said Styles was a boy.”

Suddenly, Shockley gasps. “That’s a reality distortion field!

Kowalczyk grins. “Mrs. Shockley gets a clue.”

The reality distortion field is being generated by the girl herself. She is every bit as seductive and charismatic as the rumors claim. Ogden is fascinated. Shockley is disgusted. She demands, “Kowalczyk, where’d you get this shit?”

“Off the illegal Darknet, of course. You can find anything you want there, if you’re willing to put some effort into looking. Right, Jimmy?”

James Sparks, his young assistant, deadpans, “You’d be surprised.”

The four of them study the videos, looking for clues into who the girl is, who made the videos, and where. They guess that whoever made these was probably the girl’s adult lover. In the similar Japanese case of Aya-chan’s Little Loli Love Hotel, they agree to consider the rumor that Aya Shibata repeatedly raped the son of a Yakuza boss in reward for making the videos. Rebel Rebel may have come from the same source as the Shibata videos, though the two girls are subtly different. The faces and voices were obviously processed to disguise the girl’s identity; but Rebel’s blond hair and cinnamon skin set off alarm bells in Shockley’s mind.

“That’s Shira Thomas,” she says through her teeth, “isn’t it.”

Stu laughs. “That sexy teenage superslut you got such a hate-on for? Wrong-o, Princess Di! That’s Kira Thomas.”

“And how do you know this?”

“Think. Rebel Rebel stopped right when Kira did, right after the Revolution.”

“We found her corpse on the Mall after the Revolution,” Sparks adds. “Our medical examiners were about to perform an autopsy on her when the Wilder Foundation bought it right out from under us. We’re told they’ve been doing experiments on it ever since, but they pulled trade secrets over it. Personally, I think they tried to bring her back from the dead.”

Suddenly Ogden exclaims, “She did it!” Kowalczyk, Shockley, and Sparks peer at him skeptically. “She made these videos herself!

Sparks freezes the video, reverses it several frames with the trackball, and zooms in on Rebel’s half-hidden hand at the left edge of the frame. Even though the frame is blurry, the black rectangle she holds in it is clearly a remote. “Like that?”

“Yeah! Like that!”

A window appears: Kira in her last known photograph, beaming beautifully. “Rebel doesn’t have the Thomas twins’ big nose and red frightwig, as you can see. Aya’s ‘moé loli’ with a ‘peach girl’ tan. If that’s Kira Thomas, she got completely Resculpted. Twice.”

“Then whoever it is,” asks Shockley, “why would she inflict such a horror on the world?”

Sparks shrugs. “Beats me. For the lulz, I guess.”

Kowalczyk slaps his forehead and laughs. “But of course! Exploit pedophiles’ perversions and get easy money by the millions! She’s even more cynical than I am! Rebel Rebel, I like you!”

Ogden stares at the screen like a zombie, even after Kowalczyk turns the monitor off. “Uh-oh,” says Kowalczyk. He and Shockley have to drag Ogden out of the building and into his car.

Rebel Styles appears to Ogden in a dream, emerging out of darkness. She is totally nude, and she is coming closer. “Please come and play with me, Officer.”

“No!” She is only a child, he warns himself. Remember, she is only a child.

Slowly she comes closer, holding out her arms to embrace him, entrap him. “I want you to make love to me.”

“Away with thee, demon!” he shouts. He tries to run away from her, only to find he cannot move. Her image becomes ever clearer and more intense. His eyes widen in horror yet burn with unwanted desire. “Dear God and Mary, help!” When Rebel comes close enough to touch him, he screams and wakes up in a cold sweat.

Ogden angrily barges into Kowalczyk’s lab and demands, “How come you’re not affected by this Rebel Rebel shit?”

Kowalczyk grins and shrugs. “I’m Charmproof.”

At lunch, Shockley tells Kowalczyk, “I bet your hacker cousin ‘Deth Pussy’ may be in on this, Stu.”

Kowalczyk grimaces at the name. “Let’s go find out,” he snarls.

When Ogden, Shockley, and Kowalczyk raid Steven Ragoczy’s house, they find no trace of Rebel Rebel on hard disk, flash storage, nor pirated BD-R. Ogden roughs Steve up and demands to know where Rebel Styles is. Shockley and Kowalczyk pull him off to restrain him. Once Kowalczyk has a firm hold on Ogden from behind, Shockley screams in his face: “What the hell are you doing, Ogden? You just ruined our piracy case against him with illegal police brutality!”

Back at the COPCO field office, Radisson stares disapprovingly at Ogden through the big monitor. “I can see the stress of this case is starting to get to you. I’m afraid I’ll have to take you off it for as long as it takes you to recover.”

“But—”

Shockley interrupts, “Ogden, I told you this is the kind of case only a woman can handle.”

“I agree,” says Radisson. “Agent Ogden, I’m taking you off this case for your own safety.”

Ogden spends the following week away from the office, doing nothing but watching Rebel Rebel videos. The case is now on him. He is too obsessed to sleep. As the sun sets one last time, he tries to go into the screen so he can rape Rebel Styles. He knocks over the television; it falls on him; the plasma screen explodes.

He dreams that Rebel Styles is raping him. She laughs at her victim as she rides and whips him like an abused horse. Crucified on Christ’s cross, he screams the torments of the damned.

He wakes up in a pool of his own blood. Not bothering to clean himself up, he takes his gun to work and shoots up the COPCO field office. He kills no more than two people only because Shockley is quick enough to shoot him down.

The agents visit the hospital where the ruin that was once Special Agent Joe Ogden now screams and moans incessantly. “That pain’s not from the bullet wound,” the nurse apologizes.

They try to visit Ogden at the mental hospital. “I’m afraid it’s incurable,” says the psychiatrist.

Home from the madhouse, Shockley stares at the video seductress who destroyed Ogden. Her Patriot Country singer husband is out on tour, and who knows what he’s doing with whom after and between shows, so she feels she has nothing else to do. Repulsed, she gathers all her will to resist the urge to murder her by shooting the screen. She vows to hunt down Rebel Styles and destroy her.

Spanner Chapter 2: Sex Bomb (Final Revision)

Chapter 1

Chaos Angel Spanner — Book 1: Rock City Blues
Chapter 2: Sex Bomb (Revision 3)

Another chapter greatly expanded from the first draft, and even that version was expanded (see original introduction below). This time, we meet another menace to the Conservative Revolution, one who lives on video, and witness the damage as it happens. Even your television set may be rising up against the New World Order...

Third Revision Update: Several plot elements from later chapters now make their first appearance, or are at least foreshadowed, here.

Fourth Revision Update: All six sections are now expanded and improved, and sometimes even moved, with a much stronger Fourth Revision continuity.

Table of Contents:
 1. Lethal Lolita (June 6, 2011; Final Revision 7/2/12)
 2. Ghost Hunting (June 7, 2011, Final Revision 7/5/2012)
 3. Shockley on the Case (June 7, 2011, Final Revision 7/5/2012)
 4. Rebel’s Game (June 8, 2011)
 5. The Rebel Sell (June 9-10, 2011, Final Revision 7/5/2012)
 6. The Dangerous Type (June 11, 2011, revised 10/25/11)
 7. Interlude 2: The Brown Note (June 12, 2011, Final Revision 7/5/2012)

The introduction to the original chapter, called “Brown Note”, is largely obsolete by now, though the very last sentence is entirely accurate:
Here's my third semiweekly installment of Spanner. As you can see, the story is still episodic at this early stage, looking more like a series of interrelated short stories strung together. This is because it’s still really early in the story, and I’m still establishing all the major plot threads. Once I’ve done that, the full continuity will kick in, and the story will shift into overdrive.

The original version of this chapter was posted on the AugNoWriMo forums (now closed). The version now posted is the official 2.0 version, greatly expanded from the original [and posted during NaNoWriMo 2010]. It was originally intended to be a post-chapter interlude, but grew into an entire chapter with a coda interlude of its own. Except for the section with Diana and her daughter Belle at home, everything up to the line “Prove it!” was written during AugNoWriMo, as were the first two paragraphs of the Interlude; these were first posted here as the original version 1.0. Everything else in this expanded version was written for the 2.0 version during NaNoFiMo.

Here's where the real controversy begins. You've been warned...

In a dark smoke-filled room somewhere in the TrumpCity™ Administrative Zone, five men hold an emergency meeting to discuss a plan of action against Spanner: United Corporations chairman Richard Becket, FBI director Karl Radisson, COPCO CEO Brendan Sparks, Dictel CEO Lt. Col. Thomas Drake Becket (U.S. Army, Retired), and, dominating this meeting with his grim imposing presence that intimidates even his brothers, a visibly disturbed Homeland Security Secretary C. Henry Becket. Secretary General Stephen Harper and Vice President Sarah Palin observe by satellite from Holy City and let the experts plan. President Goldman Sachs and TrumpCity™ owner TrumpCo signal their presence with giant logos looming overhead to remind them who is in control.

“I think our terrorist intended to embarrass the Cartel,” says the Chairman. “He certainly succeeded.”

“No, I think this terrorist wanted to embarrass me,” says the Colonel. “He cut through my defenses like butter.”

“I still think Apple’s jealous competition hired him to keep it out of the Cartel,” says the COPCO CEO. “Paul, you’d better get it investigated.”

“I’m convinced this was an anarchist assault on the Revolution,” says the Director. “We’re already looking into every Anonymous cell we can sniff out.”

The Secretary slams his fist down and thunders, “Stop this nonsense!” The others fall silent. “If that terrorist is not stopped now, our Revolution will be destroyed, and the fate of America with it!”

september 2012...
Kira and Shira were so close no one knew where one ended and the other began, so intimate they made love in their dreams. After the coup robbed Shira of her second self, her wounded passion invaded her mother’s dreams. Two weeks after, Hope woke up to find sleeping Shira making love to her. She tried to stop her, break her, even punish; Shira begged, wailed, said she couldn’t stop — and she didn’t. Eventually, Hope gave up; Shira has cried her eternal gratitude and adoration ever since...

apartment, bremerton. —two souls explode into one — Hope wakes up, Shira collapses onto her, hot sweat streams down and tickles their skin, they settle into an embrace at once hard and gentle. Hope caresses Shira’s soft buttocks; Shira moans softly and answers with a long soft kiss. Hope sighs. “You’ve gotten so good at this...”

Shira’s tears fall onto her face; she smiles. “Anything to worship you.”

Hope laughs gently. Mother and daughter have shared one bed since they lost Kira. Their bodies are completely comfortable with each other, their minds intimate with each other’s thoughts, their hearts bound by deep love and a shared void where Kira once was. “Everything was successful?”

Shira grins. “We got the Tachibanas out, took the book, and gave the Man a big juicy surprise with extra bacon and cheese. I say mission accomplished.”

Hope’s expression turns deadly serious. “Fun’s over now, darling. They’re mad like raging bulls. Expect their answer any time.”

Trembling with enthusiasm, Shira sits up and pumps her fist. “I say let the bulls out! This fight’s only begun.”

early morning. On all official channels, the news spreads the pleas of terrified Americans crying out for a hero. On all screens, the strong and serious face of Secretary Becket appears to deliver a warning to the Nation and the world.
Tonight, a terrorist attacked the economic heart of the Empire. From previous messages we have intercepted, we know his purpose is not in the service of an enemy nation, but solely out of nihilistic hatred of America. His methods are beyond normal human comprehension. America’s heroic military and law enforcement personnel are doing their part to stop this menace that eats at the heart of Our Nation. But America is in desperate need for even greater heroes. We shall find these heroes, and they shall save America. May God bl—
On all screens, another face suddenly interrupts: black motorcycle helmet, skull and crossed wrenches emblazoned above the faceplate, eight-bit pixelized, Atari rainbow rising in the background, tickers above and below repeating the word SUBVERTISEMENT. In a Votrax voice, the apparition speaks:
The lamestream is now done spinning its lies. Now I will unspin the truth. Call me Spanner.

Last night I sent a clear message to the American supermen. But greed, faith, and self-infatuation has turned their minds to mush. Therefore, I will explain.

They claim they defend freedom. But their freedom is that of the bully who robs others of theirs. Their blindness tells them the only true freedom is freedom from freedom itself. Their freedom will self-destruct.

They emptied an entire city for — what, a business meeting? For one little party, they enraged millions. The people will not tolerate a repeat.

Their ideal is no ideal. They call it Synarchy. We call it central planning. It never works. It violates the Law of Entropy. The people can run their lives just fine without interfering rulers. That is anarchy.

Don’t try to find me; I am everywhere. You cannot identify me; I am anyone and no one. You cannot punish me; I am the virus in the System. I am not the superhero come to save you from yourselves. I am the Angel of Chaos.

This message will self-destruct in five... four... three... two... one...

On all screens, the color-bar test pattern. The long long beep. A standard male television announcer voice interrupts.
This is the Emergency Alert System. A Code Red Terror Alert has been issued for the entire East Coast in the wake of the terror attack on TrumpCity tonight. FBI Director Karl Radisson is offering a twenty-five million dollar reward for the identification and capture of the terrorist known as Spanner. A spokesman for President Goldman Sachs & Company says the President wants the terrorist eliminated as soon as possible.

Shepherd Tremayne. We have a problem.
“Mr. Secretary! I take it we didn’t catch the terrorist?”
There is a reason why the Crime Prevention Division’s precognitive agents went mad. This “Spanner” is no mere terrorist, but a new kind of weapon, not a man but a virus. He has already infected the media, as you have seen. The perfidious rabble are already inflating him into a superhero.
“You are describing a supernatural threat, Mr. Secretary. This is an act of spiritual warfare, aimed at us by the forces of Darkness.”
Not Darkness, Mr. Tremayne. Chaos. It is not just the life of Our Nation that is in danger, but the very order of things. The first law of Heaven is Order. We are under direct assault by Chaos itself. Universal destruction is in our future if we are not at all times vigilant. Gird your loins, Mr. Tremayne, and prepare for war.
“I understand, Mr. Secretary. God bless America!”
America bless God.
The Secretary’s face disappears, and the news of Spanner resumes. You have never before seen such worry nor heard such fear in the stolid stonelike visage of the man who was once America’s superheroic defender against Communism. Henry Becket is the rock of the Nation, yet this Spanner has shaken him. You click and click in search of a Spanner-free channel but do not find it. The Secretary is right: Spanner is a virus. He has infected the media. The entire Telesphere is dying of his disease. You can feel all Anonymous laugh at you.

Suddenly, the channel changes itself. You click and click, but the channel now refuses to change. To your horror, you see a dark-skinned blond girl, lying on her side on a luxurious-looking bed, facing left. She is beautiful. She is charismatic. She is utterly seductive, totally nude, insanely horny, completely without shame. She is the infamous Rebel Styles, and she is your deepest, darkest secret.

She is a child of no more than eight.

Slowly she rolls over to face you, smiling seductively. Discreetly she keeps her left hand between her legs, as if to disguise her gender. In her right hand, she holds a television remote. The image gradually zooms in on her pretty face. She coos:
Come to me. I know what you want. I can see deep into your heart. I know the desires you’re most afraid to see. You want me.
You cannot resist Rebel. You are utterly entranced.

Suddenly, she stares straight into your eyes and says nothing for an endless moment. Still smiling enigmatically, she says:
Will you die for me?
Your will is no longer your own. Under her compulsion, you say, “Yes, my love, I will die for you.” She smiles sweetly.

You reach for your revolver. At first, hoping to murder Rebel, you point it at the screen. But then your sick desire for this child seductress compels you to turn the pistol at yourself. You plead weakly, “Jesus America, please forgive me.” You insert the barrel into your mouth. At last, you pull the trigger.

You were Shepherd-Mayor Ward Tremayne, spiritual rock of the Fearsome Foursome. Now you are dead.
BREAKING NEWS FLASH!
Amanda Currie: (breathlessly) Word has just come in to the ESPNBC Newsroom that the Shepherd-Mayor of the Metropolitan City of Seattle sponsored by Boeing Defense Industries, Incorporated, has been assassinated!
Cub Reporter: (on the scene) That’s right, Amanda! It has now been confirmed that the man who committed suicide in this house is indeed Shepherd-Mayor Ward Tremayne, dictator of Seattle appointed by Chief Shepherd Drusilla Becket herself. FBI spokesman J. Locke Holmes announced that the murder weapon was a curse.
J. Locke Holmes: (at FBI press conference room) We have found no signs of physical damage or struggle, or even natural causes, so we had no choice but to conclude that this was a supernatural attack.
Amanda: As expected, the Caliphate claimed responsibility.
Spokesterrorist: (in mountain lair) You decadent Western infidels have not yet unconditionally surrendered to the eternal dominion of our immortal Mahdi, blessèd be he forever. We shall continue to escalate our death prayers until either you surrender to Allah or you are all dead and suffering eternal torment in Hell, with weeping and gnashing of teeth. Glory be to—
Amanda: The Earth Revolutionary Front also claims responsibility.
Spokesterrorist: (in forest lair) As long as you people continue to rape Our Mother, we will continue to work and pray toward your destruction until you and all your Earth-destroying technology and pollution are all purged and cleansed from her body. Blessèd be! Down—
Amanda: The Socialist Revolutionary Organization refuses to comment. So far we have heard no further word from Spanner.

hotel, portland. Leila suddenly wakes and sits bolt upright, the covers flying off her bare drenched skin. Dripping sweat glues her short black hair to her forehead. She breathes heavily, gasping for air.

She struggles out of the bedcovers and sits at the side of the bed and lets the sweat run down her skin. She has never experienced anything like this. The vision always ends the same way. But not now. The wordless sense that something huge is about to happen overwhelms her. She tries to think about it for a while. Then she gets up to take a long cold shower.

The exhausted girl sits listlessly in the food court and watches Apple try to beat Microsoft into the Cartel on the television screens above and the world take one step closer to the end, and despairs. And then the same thing happens to the Cartel that happened in her dream that morning: the whole scene descends into chaos. But this time the chaos is caused by a man — a mystery man on a hoverboard wielding smoke bombs, exploding flares, and a monkeywrench. And the talking heads are calling him after the monkeywrench: Spanner. The world tries to take one more step to oblivion, and an angel of chaos descends to trip it.

house, bremerton. Now she dreams that Shira is making love to her. She wakes bolt upright. For how long she cannot count, she sits there stunned, remembering last night’s dream, wondering if Shira has anything to do with that Spanner...

She showers, dresses, meets her mother at breakfast, idly traces her tattoos with her finger. Taylor asks, “Darling, you look like you just had a nightmare or something.”

“Have you ever dreamt that Shira Thomas was making love to you?”

Taylor laughs. “You haven’t met her yet?”

“Of course not!” snaps Leila.

“She wants to, of course. I’ve even heard rumors she built a shrine to you.”

“Well, I hope she stays far away then.”

“Oh, you’ll be meeting her soon, I guarantee it. You’re in Shira country now. In Shira country, what Shira wants, Shira gets, and what she wants is you.” Taylor winks.

Leila’s eyes go wide, her jaw drops; she stares at her mother in shock.

He tries never to sleep because he believes sleep is unproductive and a waste of time: so much to do, so little time. But the new anti-sleep drug he’s taking makes him hallucinate one night before the big screen in his hotel room. Eventually the swirling vision takes the form of his greatest fear.

“I know what you want,” she calls to him in her seductive lilting voice. “You want Rebel Rebel. You want me more than anything else in the world.” McTeague stares at her in utter fascination, like a bird hypnotized by the eyes of a cobra. “Take me. Ravish me. I’m yours and only yours.” He obeys her command, climbs through the television screen and into her world, and tries to rape her — only to find himself trapped forever inside the screen. Rebel laughs at him as he screams in absolute terror.

When Chairman McTeague fails to come to work, his assistants send corporate security agents to his mansion. Soon he finds himself locked in a rubber room at Western State Hospital, irrevocably mad, never to return to the outside world. The Boeing acquisition fails.

mudlark house. Home. Overjoyed to be alive, too excited to sleep, Jennifer leaped into Willa’s bed, kissed the length of the iridescent Chinese dragon tattoo coiled around Willa’s body, made love to her all night — sustaining the height of ecstasy as long as they can till it seems an eternity, heaven and earth collapse into one another, mother and daughter-wife lose their identities in each other and the whole universe, for hours and hours—

They collapse into each other’s arms, hold tight each other’s drenched bodies, attack each other with deep delirious violent kisses till the sun comes up...

The small bathtub for them alone always knows when they are ready. Jennifer programmed it. She leads Willa by the hand into a fresh bubble bath. “I’ve never felt so alive in my life.”

Willa laughs. “Now you know exactly what terrorists and bank robbers live for.”
“I thought they were in it for the money and that idealistic kinda stuff.”

“Oh, those are just game achievements, proof on the scoreboard that you won. In truth they crave the thrill of cheating death and getting away with murder, the same way addicts crave drugs. Idealism? Pelf? Cover stories.”

Jennifer cuddles up tight. “That’s why I’m so glad Shira and I have you and Hope to ground us.”

“Well, keep us connected so you don’t come unmoored.”

Her expression turns grim. “Like Talia...”

mid-morning. “I know what you did,” she purrs to Jesse Jameson, state Party chairman, “and I know you want more. You can never get enough. Do it to me again.”

He stabs his wife over a hundred times. He shoots up the Salem COPCO office and steals several Toymaker bombs set to explode on impact. He recklessly races his rigged Range Rover into Cascadia Public Management Corporation headquarters, through the gate, right into Chairman Walter Brinkman himself.

Fully transformed into invulnerable werewolf form, Brinkman suffers not a scratch; reverting to his usual half-transformed state, he surveys the damage around him as angry COPCO agents arrive. “Investigate this Rebel Styles,” he screams through the phone at Chairman Sparks. “I demand you put an end to this madness now!”
Amanda: Even more breaking news!
Cub Reporter: (at CPMC corporate headquarters outside Salem) Party state chairman Jesse Jameson just killed himself in a bizarre suicide bombing attack on CPMC headquarters!

While her parents sail Rich Passage, she kneels before the family Buddhist altar to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with absolute determination: for the people’s happiness, for their liberation from this hell of tyranny, and for her twin cousins, without a single thought of herself.

late morning. “Come and play with Rebel Rebel,” she coos to Justice J. Jasper Johnson, the executioner of child pornographers who has publicly vowed to personally slay this demoness. “I’m your lover forever. You cannot possibly resist me.” He hates her with all his heart because she tortures him with uncontrollable desire. He shoots every television in his house, then murders his sleeping wives, children, and slaves. He sets fire to his mansion, not to cover up the crime but to exorcise the succubus from his mind once and for all.

He fails. When Jasper Johnson arrives late at the courthouse, he brings his beloved assault rifle to his office and massacres his entire staff. He is shot dead by antiterrorist strike police.
Amanda: Still more breaking news yet!
Cub Reporter: (at the Supreme Court in Salem) Cascadia’s Chief Justice, J. Russell Johnson, has just massacred his entire staff! The FBI is looking into allegations that terrorists summoned demons to possess him.
Amanda: Thank you. In yet more breaking news, Cascadia Public Management Corporation CEO J. shopping arcade, bremerton. Shira, Jennifer, and Karen meet downtown in the coffee shop that is not Starbuck’s or Tully’s, where Keenan Sasser and Ada Paulette wait for them. Their beautiful, elegant Korean-American friend Daisy Kwon says, “Hi, guys!” They rush over to hug her and the friend she’s tutoring, Marina Reyes.

At Keenan and Ada’s table, the meeting begins. “Girls!” says Keenan. “You won’t believe what else Spanner unleashed.”

“All morning there’s been news of Party leaders going nuts or killing people,” Ada explains, “and they all had one thing in common, and you won’t guess what.”

Shira fidgets with anticipation. “What?”

Ada narrows her eyes and says conspiratorially, “Rebel Styles.”

The girls gasp. Shira goes, “Oooooooh!”

“You have something to do with that?” asks Keenan.

Shira protests, “I didn’t know a thing about that till you told me!”

At that moment, Ariel Shield walks in. She double takes at the sight of Shira. “Oh Shira, how nice to see you!” She rushes over, Shira gets up, and they hug.

“Did you bring Leila to me?” whispers Shira.

“She’s here.”

Jennifer stands up at the shock of the name. “What?!” Daisy and Marina gasp.

“Oh boy,” Ada says grimly. “this is gonna get real fun.”

Secretary Radisson says in his Australian accent, “You two are the most effective agents we’ve got, so I’m putting you on the case. COPCO operatives will meet you as soon as you get to Seattle.”

Spanner Interlude 1: Rocket Ready

...from previous

Chaos Angel Spanner
Interlude 1: Rocket Ready

You are dreaming. You watch three crazy beautiful teenage girls prepare to launch a model rocket.

One is copper-haired and bronze-skinned; she wears a Spanner-insignia flight jacket, trendy short black-and-pink-striped tennis dress, black lace-up boots, and black stockings high up her thighs. She is Shira Thomas, and she is directing the operation.

The tallest girl has long blond hair and pale skin. She looks like a supermodel who could rule Pretty City, but she has the brilliant mind of a scientist. She wears pragmatic clothing: faded blue jeans, salmon pink “Science Girls” T-shirt, and old tennis shoes. Over her rimless round glasses, she wears laboratory safety goggles. She is Shira’s cousin and BFF, Jennifer Blair, and this rocket is her creation.

The short girl sports short tousled brown hair and silver-trimmed black schoolgirl sailor fuku. She is cute, Japanese, and genki genki genki. She is an exchange student, and her name is Harumi Tachibana.

The rocket stands erect, ready to launch. Jennifer checks her mission control computer to make sure everything’s A-OK. Harumi slips in behind her. When the genki girl sees the big red button blink temptingly, she gleefully prances over to it and pounds it hard with her fist. When Jennifer sees the rocket start spewing exhaust, she turns around and is shocked to see the interloper.

At the top of her lungs, Harumi yells out, “LAUNCH!”

The mission control computer announces, “LAUNCH SEQUENCE ACTIVATED.”

Jennifer throws her safety goggles to the ground in frustration. “Haru-chan, stop it at once!”

Harumi sticks out her tongue and says “Bleeeeehhh!”

With a mighty thrust and a cloud of exhaust, the rocket launches into the air. It makes several loop-de-loops before it finally decides on a stable course, pointed straight toward you. “TARGET ACQUIRED,” it says. It gets bigger and bigger as it rockets toward you. It reaches its destination and lodges itself in your brain. You are annoyed. You mumble.

The rocket takes up the entire center of your field of vision. Jennifer appears to the left. She inspects the rocket and your head. Then she crosses her arms, looks up at an angle, and says “Mumble.” To the right, Harumi jumps up and down and squeals “Yatta!” Shira enters your field of vision in closeup. She inspects the rocket from the left. Then she inspects your head from the right. She flashes you a mischievous cockeyed grin that tells you that she’s not about to pull the rocket out of your brain. Instead, she digs in her jacket pocket, pulls out a bomb timer, sticks it to the rocket, and starts it ticking.

Jennifer frowns at Shira. Shira grins back at her naughtily. Harumi giggles. Annoyed, you grumble.

Our Cyberpunk World: Punch You Dead with My Electric Gauntlet

2011 Invention Awards: A Crime-Fighting Armored Glove (Popular Science)

You think fascist tech isn't advancing? Soon, the cops, starting in LA, will be wearing their own zap gauntlets. The inventor of the BodyGuard is saying it'll be used for catching crooks. But we cyberpunks know better. It's going to be used when the shit comes down, to electrocute dissidents. At least that's what COPCO, the private police monopoly in Spanner, uses them for.

Now for the Law of Unintended Consequences: soon the crooks will start getting their own zap gloves on the black market, and then the never-ending war between the cops and the gangs will start getting scary...

And no, civilians can't have it. It's being sold to police departments and the Pentagon only. Which is why I call it fascist tech: its intended customers intend to use it against us.

Author's note to himself: the BodyGuard combines 1) stun gun 2) video camera 3) laser pointer 4) armoured gauntlet. Now watch JT take down a gang of steroid-maddened klownz by himself with a souped-up set of these things. And those work gloves Jennifer turns into datagloves? She could just as easily turn them into zap gloves by adding stock stun gun components...

Our Cyberpunk World: Your Very Own Kitty Ears

The article: Augmented Body: Wear Cat Ears Controlled By Brain Waves (Bit Rebels)

And you thought catgirls were some silly Japanese animation thing. Well, think again. Now you too can have your own kitty ears! Just put on a set of Necomimi — which means, of course, "cat ears" in Japanese, and by extension "cat-eared person" — and you can actually be a catgirl. Or catboy, if you're a bishounen.

Oh yes, and the ears move. Now if only Neurowear would put out a model that allows you to move one ear at a time, for that adorable cocked-ear look that all the cutest catgirls get...

Spanner 1.5: The Virus Has Been Spread

The grand finale to Chapter 1, rearranged and condensed from the initial second-draft version from NaNoEdMo 2011, with new material added. These are just the initial aftershocks of last section’s big event. The real chaos is yet to come...

Chaos Angel Spanner — Chapter 1: Spanner in the Works
Part 5: The Virus Has Been Spread (Revision 3)

19 august 2014.
“Suppress it!” commands Henry Becket. “No word must get out, period!”

Spanner’s image infects the Eye, imprinting his image onto the unnatural mind of Echelon. Wherever there is thoughtcrime, it will see Spanner. Wherever there is underground resistance, it will see Spanner. Wherever the excesses inherent in Corporatist tyranny drive desperate masses into revolt, in the colonies or in the Homeland itself, it will see Spanner. The last thing it ever sees will be Spanner.

In Washington, Homeland Security Secretary Karl Radisson declares him Public Enemy Number One and thunders the order in his Australian drawl: “Find the masked terrorist who calls himself Spanner! Sniff him out, smoke him out, tear off his mask! Find out who he is, and bring him to me at once, alive or dead! We must burn out this virus before it destroys our sacred Empire!” The official news channels carry the message: “A $25 billion reward is being offered for the capture of this terrorist. Anyone with any information about him is urged to contact the National Police Agency at once. The number is...”

The Pentagon orders all domestic counterterror units, from Delta Force to Dictel’s Strike Division, to hunt and kill the terrorist wherever he manifests himself and in whatever form. Meanwhile, disgruntled conscript soldiers and underpaid mercenaries in the occupation forces abroad and at home adopt Spanner as a shield behind which to conceal their own plots against the Corporatist régime.

In TrumpCity, the Becket brothers oversee the evacuation of all personnel, alive or dead, from Madison Square Garden to secret secure locations that Trump has scattered throughout the city he owns. Richard Becket calls the COPCO field office. Since clone resurrection is a time-consuming process, Agent 42 now stands in for the currently incapacitated Agent 6.

“COPCO Command. This is Agent 42. May I help you, Mr. Chairman?”

“Find any Trump Security video with Spanner in it after he left Madison Square Garden.”

“Sir, we’ve been trying to do that since the incident, but we have no record of him even leaving Madison Square Garden.”

“You aren’t looking hard enough!”

“Or even of him entering. Sir, I believe he’s cloaked.”

What?

The hacker underground spreads the media virus to the whole world as fast as the transmission channels can take it. A tribe of phone hackers have found a way to piggyback their signals onto others carried by the communications monopoly AT&T without Ma Bell’s own hypervigilant spybots noticing. They are AT&T’s shadowy longtime nemeses, the Phreaks.

Before the “Spanner Incident” begins to die down, one particular Phreak codenamed Debaser leaves the COPCO lines to take his position among the Mole People beneath the empty city. Sparks forwards the tapped security video to mafia-owned servers in Nigeria, Russia, and Mongolia. From there, guerrilla hackers edit, tweak, and transform the raw footage.

Other Phreaks throughout the vast territories of the American Empire receive, in separate transmissions, a series of bootleg concert videos of DisneyPop SuperStar Minty Fresh and a Sudoku game. The number of possible solutions of a Sudoku puzzle is 6.71 × 1021, which comes out to somewhere around 70 bits binary. DES encryption uses a 56-bit key. The Phreaks use the Sudoku puzzles to decrypt the video and reveal the Spanner footage within the Minty Fresh video. The Spanner video is then posted to clandestine Darknet servers worldwide.

The time: 26 minutes.

The news spreads throughout the worldwide underground in minutes. Soon, the corporate media can no longer ignore it. Defying Dr. Becket’s orders, the networks compete to see who can swarm TrumpCity with news copters first. Hordes of reporters invade Manhattan accompanied by the networks’ own security agents and broadcast their stories to the world:
Fox: Spanner—
Sun: Spanner—
ABCNN: Spanner—
QVCBS: Spanner—
ESPNBC: Spanner—
The story gives the networks their highest news ratings since the coup. People overwhelm the phone system to spread the news. They text, tweet, and email the security video. Spanner is the subject of all conversation, the new obsession of America and the world.

The virus has been spread.
